Coronavirus infection continues to spread uncontrollably across the European continent. While the epidemic in Asia is on the decline, and in the post-Soviet space, the authorities for the most part manage to cope with the new challenge, the world is increasingly looking at the European Union as a leper. Many prominent experts even predict that the coronavirus in Europe will be the beginning of the end of a powerful association.
How many Europeans have been infected with the coronavirus
According to the latest statistics, as of March 21, 74,142 cases of Covid-19 infection were recorded in Europe. Died from the coronavirus 3347 people of the inhabitants of the Old World. Currently, new cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded in Europe, and more than 50,000 tests are awaiting verification.
The first case of infection with a dangerous disease in Europe was diagnosed on January 24 in France, the coronavirus was noted in a girl who returned from China. Four days later, Germany reported the first intra-European case of transmission.
Footnote: To date, coronavirus infection has been reported in 52 European countries.
Which European countries have been quarantined
Due to the fact that Europeans occupy a significant share among those infected with coronavirus, strict quarantine measures are being introduced in many states of the European continent. Currently, this emergency measure is practiced in the following countries:
- "Old" Europe (Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Belgium);
- Northern Europe (Norway, Denmark);
- Young members of the European Union (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria)
- Non-EU countries (Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine)
- Quarantine is also valid in Malta and Greece.
In addition, many European states have taken various restrictions in order to counter the coronavirus:
- Romania closes for quarantine all arriving citizens from the northern provinces of Italy;
- The EU countries are obliged to inspect citizens arriving from the north of Italy;
- Türkiye and Israel do not allow citizens arriving from Italy to enter their territory;
- UK quarantines all visitors from Lombardy and Veneto;
- Many European countries have closed educational institutions, cafes and shops during the outbreak of coronavirus infection. In many states, only supermarkets and pharmacies operate.
The situation in the countries with the highest number of infected
Against the background of the general trouble in Europe regarding the situation with the coronavirus, in some countries there is a critical situation at all. First of all, Italy should be included here, which ranks second after China in terms of the number of infected people. Also, the nature of the Covid-19 epidemic is observed in Germany, Spain, France and Switzerland. So far, in the designated countries, the authorities have not been able to curb the development of coronavirus infection, even with the sometimes emergency measures taken.
Italy
Many cities in northern Italy, which are engulfed by an outbreak of coronavirus, are literally depopulated. In the last week on the Apennine peninsula, most retail outlets, restaurants and bars, in which ordinary situations were very fond of gathering, were closed. The following reports testify to the severity of the epidemic:
- The number of infected people reached 47,021;
- Italy has broken into first place in the world in terms of the number of deaths from coronavirus;
- 32 countries have identified a cluster in northern Italy as the focus of the disease;
- On March 20, Italy recorded the highest number of deaths from Covid-19.
The most difficult situation is still observed in the regions of Lombardy and Veneto, in the cities of which 50 thousand inhabitants are completely isolated.
Germany
As of March 21, 2020, Germany is in third place in Europe in terms of the number of infected citizens. Now 19,848 cases of infection with this disease have been recorded. 60 people died from the new flu in Germany.
Covid-19 in Germany was first confirmed on January 27, which was diagnosed in Bavaria. Initially, the spread of this infection was associated with this case, which, however, could not be stopped at an early stage. Therefore, already on February 28, the federal government postponed most of the cultural events to a later date.
At the same time, Germany among European countries is the most advanced in the development of a vaccine for coronavirus. Scientists assure that for ordinary citizens the medicine will be ready by the end of 2020.
France
In terms of the number of sick citizens, the French Republic ranks fourth in Europe. Cases of infection in the country are associated with Chinese and Italian clusters. Despite the generally controlled situation, the situation in the country with coronavirus, judging by the following reports, is quite serious:
- The disease is officially confirmed in 11 of the 13 provinces of the country, while Corsica and the Central region remain “clean”;
- The number of infected citizens has reached people;
- 450 people died from a new disease;
- 1512 citizens recovered from coronavirus.
The actions of the French government in the fight against Covid-19 are not original: all mass and cultural events throughout the country have been canceled. Also, all schoolchildren were sent on extraordinary holidays.
Spain
The Kingdom faced the coronavirus at the same time as Italy. The first diagnosis of Covid-19 in Spain was noted on January 31, a German tourist turned out to be infected. However, the disease acquired the character of an epidemic by February 24, when there was an outbreak of infections associated with the Italian cluster.
Almost immediately, the Spanish government began to take preventive measures in the fight against a dangerous disease. However, despite all efforts, cases have been reported in 18 out of 50 Spanish provinces. By March 21, the number of cases exceeded 20 thousand, and 1588 people died from a dangerous infection.
Switzerland
The first cases of infection in the Alpine Republic were recorded on February 25 in the canton of Ticino, neighboring Italy. The first victims of the epidemic were the elderly, for whom the coronavirus is especially dangerous. The authorities immediately began to take steps to prevent further development of the disease. Any events with more than 1,000 participants have been cancelled. In addition, the carnivals in Bern and Basel have been postponed indefinitely.
However, the number of infected people in Switzerland continues to grow, by March 21, there are 4,164 of them. 43 citizens died from the symptoms of coronavirus.
The myth that coronavirus does not affect Europeans
At first, it was believed that the new strain of influenza affects only the inhabitants of China. Therefore, the first reports that the coronavirus reached Europe were perceived in society with a fair amount of skepticism. The frivolous attitude to this disease played a cruel joke on the citizens of the United Europe, who did not want to change their usual rhythm of life for the sake of their own safety.
There is also an extraordinary version of the origin of Covid-19. Some experts consider it the brainchild of the Americans, who still managed to develop a new genetic weapon. This theory is supported by the fact that this type of virus began to harm humanity relatively recently and seven of its strains are currently known. However, no convincing evidence for this version has yet been presented.
